5 most common mistakes during fire alarm system installation (and how to avoid them)

A fire alarm system is only as reliable as the way it has been installed. Even high-quality equipment can fail to protect a building if the installation process contains errors. Here are the 5 most common fire alarm installation mistakes — and what you can do to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Open circuit faults

One of the biggest fire alarm errors is leaving an open circuit or poor cable connection. An open circuit prevents devices from communicating with the control panel and may cause system faults. Following proper testing procedures during commissioning ensures the circuit is fully intact.

Mistake 2: Not enough detection

Insufficient coverage is a frequent problem when installing a fire alarm system. Missing detectors in rooms or blind spots reduces the system’s ability to provide early warning. This is often caused by poor design or by ignoring the recommendations of BS 5839.

Mistake 3: Not enough sounder coverage

Even if detectors are placed correctly, many installations fail because there aren’t enough sounders. Occupants must be able to clearly hear the alarm throughout the building. Poor sounder placement or too few devices create dangerous gaps in protection.

Mistake 4: Poor workmanship

Loose fixings, damaged equipment, incorrect cable routing, or failing to use fire-resistant materials can all compromise the system. Poor workmanship is one of the most common fire alarm faults — and one of the easiest to prevent by using trained and accredited installers.

Mistake 5: Not following BS 5839 and BS 7671 guidelines

Fire alarm systems in the UK must be designed and installed in line with BS 5839 (fire detection and alarm systems) and BS 7671 (electrical wiring regulations). Cutting corners or ignoring these standards leads to compliance failures and puts building safety at risk.

Avoid these fire alarm installation mistakes by choosing a competent fire alarm company that follows BS guidelines, ensures correct detection and sounder coverage, and guarantees high-quality workmanship.
